I have many new photographers that I mentor and they all ask about photographing newborns and 3 month olds. In fact, 3 month old portraits are some of my most requested posing ideas. Why … because many photographers find photographing 3 month olds challenging. Baby is past the sleepy newborn moments, but not quite able to sit independently yet for portraits. It’s an “in-between” type of milestone and knowing how to best capture this season of baby’s development is key to producing beautiful images for mom and dad to treasure.
3 month milestone baby portrait photography
The first major milestone after capturing your newborn portraits is a 3-4 month “tummy time” photo shoot. I say 3-4 moths as a guideline because every baby develops differently, at their own pace. For this milestone, I love to capture tummy time (if possible- not all babies love this position, especially if reflux is an issue).

To achieve these beautiful headshots of baby, a solid tummy time position is helpful. Some babies can do this at the 3 month mark, others may need a few weeks extra to achieve this and that is totally okay. We often do outdoor portraits with family outdoors, in the beauty of nature. However, when photographing 3 month olds, I love utilizing the studio. My portrait studio is DESIGNED for babies. We moved our studio location last year and when we did so, every inch of the new space was intentional. After 15 years of photographing babies across the Triad and Triangle areas of North Carolina, I knew what was needed in our new studio space and designed all the details around that - so rest assured, our studio space will cater to all things baby and I’m so grateful to have this space for newborns, 3 month olds, milestones and cake smash photo shoots.
