“When should I book a newborn photo shoot?”
I have been photographing babies of all ages and sizes over the past 15 years and I’m here to share some of my best tips for new moms looking to capture beautiful newborn portraits. Stay tuned for multiple topics- but today, we will discuss timing.
When to schedule a newborn photo shoot has a few components:
what time during your pregnancy is best to reserve a newbron photographer

how do we plan a newborn photo shoot when baby’s exact date of arrival is unknown
These are all excellent questions and almost all of our motherhood photography clients ask these exact questions, so here’s some details we are sharing to help relieve the stress of planning your newborn baby portrait session.

1). What stage of pregnancy is best to schedule a newborn baby photo shoot?
We suggest clients schedule their newborn portrait session at the beginning of their 2nd trimester of pregnancy.
~~~ Why so early? ~~~
Newborn portrait sessions require an extended session time in the studio. For this reason, we only schedule ONE newborn per day.
We strictly limit the number of newborn clients based on due dates of each client to ensure space on our calendar.
Please know we do ALWAYS try so hard to work in last minute newborn clients if they inquire later in pregnancy or even after they have given birth.
2.) What is the ideal time to capture newborn portraits once baby has arrived?
We work hand-in-hand with clients to schedule their newborn photo shoot. This begins at time of booking and we continue to follow up on this as mom’s due date approaches as well as after baby arrives. So many factors impact timing but in MOST circumstances, we aim to photograph baby between day 5-7 after delivery. There are many reasons behind this timing and we will be sharing this info in our next blog post - so check back soon for that info!

3.) How do we plan the date of a newborn photo shoot when baby’s arrival date in unknown?
Nearly every client inquires about this and we always say no worries. We have been photographing newborns over 15 years and while we know baby’s due date, baby almost never arrives exactly when expected. Typically most babies arrive within a 2 weeks window before or after the due date, so we allow space on our portrait studio calendar in that window of time. Occasionally, babies arrive much earlier than their due dates and we will work them into the schedule accordingly.

We always ask our moms that have pre-booked their newborn photo shoot to contact us within 24 hours after delivery so we can place you on the schedule and begin preparing for your custom styled newborn portrait session. In addition, we follow up with our clients after they return home with the baby, prior to their newbron photo session.
In the occasion clients have planned c-sections or inducements, we work with them to pre-schedule their newborn portrait session between day 5-7 even before delivery!
